Are Wood Stoves the Way to Go?

July 24th, 2011

You’re starting to get sick of having to go refill propane every other time you want to grill outside. The charcoal grill is a hassle to get lit and it takes forever to cook on. Have you thought about looking into wood stoves to get your inner-chef going in the backyard? They’re an interesting and fun alternative to grilling and make for great conversation with your barbeque guests. And for the particularly daring, they can even be used as a replacement for the stove in your kitchen.

The basic concept is an oven enclosure powered by logs. An exhaust pipe comes off the top of the unit and runs outside to ventilate the smoke. It was how people cooked before the advent of gas lines. Some people will even put them where fireplaces would normally be in the home because of their compelling looks and the ambience created by the burning wood.

Most models are made of cast iron, which is great for cooking. Cast iron actually absorbs the flavors of meat and other food as it cooks, making each successive meal tastier than the last one. The sturdy materiel also means better heat efficiency, so a good stove won’t waste any more than ten or twenty percent of the fire’s BTUs. If you’re interested in using the stove for heat, however, you can buy a model with a blower installed to distribute warmth around the house.

Be sure to talk to a professional online or at your hardware store about choosing wood stoves and the installation process involved.
