Do You Replace Furnace Filters In The Summer?

October 28th, 2011

Is it necessary for most people to replace their furnace filters in the summertime as often as they do in the winter? This is a commonly asked question that professionals often need to answer for homeowners, despite the fact that the answer is very simple when it comes down to it: do you have a combined air conditioner and furnace, or just a stand-alone furnace?

If you only have a furnace, and use separate air conditioners or fans to cool your home during the summer, congratulations! You don’t have to change your filter every month in the summer. But if you, like millions of other people, have a combination furnace & filter then you will need to replace your furnace filters just as often during the summer as you do during the winter. This is because your air conditioner is pulling air from the same place and through the same filtration system that your furnace runs off of. Once the filter gets dirty it is possible for dust to clog up the air conditioner just like with the furnace, causing it to malfunction and potentially requiring professional help to come over and fix the situation.

Remember to always treat your filtration systems with respect, no matter what the season is or which filter it use that you are using. Incorrect filtration will result in expensive hardware malfunction and potentially risky side effects, so just avoid it altogether. Replace your filters every month or every three months at most, using the proper sized filter installed correctly, and make sure to have a technician come to look at any problems that arise as soon as possible.
